Is Nonalcoholic Wine as Healthy as Red Wine?
As a producer of fine sparkling grape juice beverages, Mark Tahiliani has touted the many health advantages such as a high level of vitamins and antioxidants. Is it really as good as the real thing?
Several recent studies have indicated that one of your favorite dinner drinks may actually offer some valuable health benefits. Before you rush out to the store to stock up on your favorite Merlot, you should take the time to learn just what part of the beverage it is that is good for your body. Think about what it is you are trying to get out of the wine. Are you drinking it for the health benefits you get from the alcohol or the health benefits you get from the resveratrol? If you want the health benefits that the alcohol provides then a non-alcoholic wine will not help you. In fact, more and more scientific evidence points to the the conclusion that anything more than a moderate amount of alcohol can do long-term damage to the liver, kidneys, and other vital organs.
So to find out if nonalcoholic is as healthy as red wine, The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition reported on a study being conducted at the University of California. Researchers Dr. Jennifer R.C. Bell and her colleagues dealcoholized a 1996 Cabernet Sauvignon as part of a research project. Their findings were nothing short of amazing and were in line with what Mark Tahiliani has been saying for many years!
In part of the “wine”, they added water and in the other part, they added a mixture of water and ethyl alcohol. They then tested the results for antioxidant content, longevity in the body and overall healthy properties. The results showed the half-life of catechins was significantly shorter in the alcoholic version.
While the “health benefits” of the alcohol had been removed, they learned that the flavonoid content had been enhanced. Furthermore, the negative effects of alcohol had been removed all together. In the end the study proved that dealcoholized wine is as healthy and suggested grape juice itself might even be healthier. While this may be news to the mainstream media, our family has known about this health secret for generations. Learn more about these recent findings by following Mark Tahiliani on Twitter or subscribing to the monthly newsletter so you can stay informed about new scientific studies.
It is a fairly well-known fact that drinking wine can be beneficial to your health in a number of ways, but there are also health risks to drinking more than the recommended two glasses of wine per day. As with any form of alcohol, too much wine can cause damage to your body in different ways. The Mark Tahiliani health tip of the week will discuss this issue in greater detail. Here are a few of the more well documented ailments that are associated with drinking too much wine.
Wine contains calories in varying proportions, depending on the type. For example; a large glass of sweet white wine can contain up to 200 calories alone. Fortified wines contain even more, sometimes hitting up to 380 calories in the case of ginger wine. Along with the alcohol’s effect in lowering inhibitions, this means that prolonged consumption of wine over a period of time without appropriate exercise or eating habits can become a cause of obesity in adults. Obesity puts excess stress on almost all of the internal organs including the heart, lungs, kidneys, the liver. Once damage is done to these vital organs, it is often difficult if not impossible to reverse.
It is still a bone of contention amongst some scientists and dietitians, but it appears that drinking red wine in moderation can help defend against the onset of heart disease. However, the operative word here is ‘moderation’.
Drinking wine in excess can have the opposite effect. Over time, the heart muscle can become weakened which leads to a condition known as cardiomyopathy. The heart muscle cannot pump the blood around your body as well as it should. This in turn can raise the risk of heart disease.
Linked somewhat to the heart disease reason explained above; alcohol in excess is known to raise blood pressure in the body. An elevated blood pressure can be dangerous in those who are already at risk from strokes and heart conditions, as well as the elderly. Although it is also known that drinking two glasses of wine per day can actively reduce the risk of suffering a stroke, any more can have the opposite effect. Unfortunately, too many people exceed this moderate limit by far too much!

Sicily, with its warm temperatures, hilly terrain, sea breezes and rich soil, is very similar to the growing conditions seen in the best wineries of California or Australia. Some of the richest flavors and most complex vintages are known to originate from this unique region. Our family has lived in this area for generations and understands the climate, soil, and characteristics of each varietal better than anyone else in the area. The result is a beverage you can be proud to enjoy and share with your family.
With such perfect conditions, it should come as little surprise that the country has more area under vine than any other major wine-making region in Italy, The Family of Mark Tahiliani has been producing the best wine of Sicily since 1823.
This year, we hope to start offering tours of the vineyard and private tasting rooms with some of our experts. If you are interested in scheduling a tour or learning a little bit more about who we are and what we offer, please contact Mark Tahiliani or any other member of the family directly.
Even if you know nothing at all about grapes, allow our staff to teach you everything you need to know to make an informed selection and be on your way to becoming a connoisseur.
